FOCUS : GLOBAL WARMING

With such a huge problem, you're probably thinking, what can one person do to help?? Besides spreading the message, here are a few simple things that you can do to help reduce the trend.

1. Drive less. A third of U.S. greenhouse emissions comes from transportation.

2. Buy and use cars with high fuel efficiency. Every gallon of gas we burn emits 21 pounds of CO2 into the air. SUVs are much less efficient than other cars and should be used only when necessary.

3. Eat less meat! Meat production is very energy intensive. If you eat less meat, you also prevent much water pollution; it's healthier too!

4. Insulate your house! Close storm windows, chaulk-up cracks, put plastic on your windows. You'll be a climate hero and you'll save money!

5. Use your AC as little as possible.

6. Switch from oil to gas. Oil produces much more CO2 per unit of heat produced.

7. Buy a front-loading washing machine. You'll save plenty of water, detergent, energy, and have cleaner clothes.

8. Buy energy-efficient appliances. Find out more about product availability and energy savings from www.epa.gov/energystar.

9. Replace your light bulbs with efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. While fluorescent buls cost more than incandescent, they use one-quarter as much electricity for the same amount of light, last ten times longer, and can save as much as $40-$60 over their lifetimes.

10. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Producing new paper, glass, and metal products from recycled materials saves 70-90% of the energy and pollution that would result if the product came from virgin materials.
