2001 GRAMMY AWARD ACCEPTANCE
SPEECHES
BEST ROCK DUO OR GROUP -- U2 for BEAUTIFUL DAY
Bono: Wow. I would like to thank God and my mother also but I just
have this feeling or picture in my head of God sorta looking down
on people like us at occasions like this thinking "Uh oh, don't
thank me for that song - there's no hook, the chorus is weak and
they'll never play it on the radio." Well, thanks for playing
it on the radio. Thank you.
SONG OF THE YEAR -- BEAUTIFUL DAY
Edge: Wow. Wow. Well on a personal level this century has been
going so well for us. We finished our album, I had a little baby
boy a while ago, the Jubilee 2000 work has been incredible - everything
has been great. Theres also been some really great breakthroughs
in science, the disposable mobile phone has come through, the 3
blade razor and now the female orgasmatron which is great. Now this.
So listen...thanks everybody, our record company has been incredible,
our management has been incredible, our producers amazing. Thank
you.
RECORD OF THE YEAR -- BEAUTIFUL DAY
Bono: I think Macy Gray really should have some of this, in fact
there's a lot of people here that should have some of this. I really
didn't expect to win this award - it's a very unusual emotion I'm
feeling right now, I think it's called humility. Completely not
used to it. The whole year has been quite humbling, going back to
scratch and reapplying for the job - what job? The Best Band in
the World job - a lot of people here tonight are up for that job.
Radiohead are up for that job on their night. The Red Hot Chilli
Peppers are up for that job on their night, and I have to say that
I'm in the Destiny's Child fanclub - they're up for that job on
their night. But right now it's our night. Thank you. Our producer
Daniel Lanois.
Daniel Lanois: Just like to say that Brian Eno could not be here
tonight, my co-producer and my compadre. Thank you Brian. And Steve
Lillywhite AND Richard Reine for being in the trenches so long with
us. Tim Palmer!
Edge: Thanks again. There's a few things I forgot to say earlier
on. We got planning on the house - anyway, I'll leave it there.
Goodbye.
